One thing to bear in mind, is that USB>VGA adapters do not use your video card. They replace it. That means two things. You have almost no chance of any kind of hardware acceleration. You will not be using this for games, and compiz may not even function. You'll only be able to use it for things your CPU can handle with absolutely no help from the GPU. Because they have their own internal GPU, a lot of people have had a LOT of driver issues.

That would give you a full size display, your laptop display, and a small side-display.

Using the fully powered hub and the laptop stand means you can have your entire desktop set up and rocking, and all you have to do is plug in the display cable and a signle USB port.
